Stay-Young Strategies:Which Ones Work?

"Growing old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you haven't committed"
— British author Anthony Powell in Temporary Kings, 1973

Done right, aging needn't feel like a punishment. Studies show that people who live to age 100, as a rule, feel fine into their 90s. But commit crimes against your body — the body you're stuck with for as long as you survive — and the passing years can wreak havoc on your health before you're 50.
Some survival strategies require little elaboration:

Maintain a healthy weight
Avoid coronary heart disease and other killer conditions associated with being overweight by keeping your weight in check: Eat fruits and vegetables and limit your intake of fat and calories. And work out regularly, being sure to combine stretching for flexibility, aerobics for endurance and weight training for strength.

Don't smoke
Quitting reduces your risk of heart disease almost immediately, and over the years also reduces your chance of getting lung diseases, including cancer.

Protect yourself from the sun's deadly rays
Age is a risk factor for skin cancer, a sometimes deadly condition that is diagnosed in more than a million Americans each year. To lower your risk, try to avoid unnecessary sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. And when you are outdoors, wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.

Don't drink to excess
While studies have shown that a single drink each day might not harm health — and might even have some beneficial effects — too much alcohol can damage almost every organ in the body and weaken the immune system.
Other strategies in the quest to stay forever young are not so simple, but are also within your power to affect. "Until recently, we thought the best recipe for a long life was to have long-lived parents," says Daniel Perry, founder and executive director of the Alliance for Aging Research. "Now we know that a vast amount is up to us, by our choices, our behaviors and the environment we live in."
To help you age with ease, Discovery Health Online has uncovered the most up-to-date answers to these critical questions:

* What kinds of food and dietary supplements can help you live longer and stronger? End the confusion about which kinds of food can add years to your life, and which can actually harm health. Plus, which dietary supplements might help stave off illness, and which entail more risk than reward?

* Can extreme dieting and other new-fashioned habits lengthen your life span? Get the last word on a calorie-restriction diet that some people swear by and whole-body scans that promise to catch cancer while it's curable.

* When does forgetfulness become a cause for concern? Sometimes forgetting is normal and sometimes it's not. From expected memory lapses to those that might signal Alzheimer's, what steps can improve brain health?

* Staying happy, staying young. What has new research revealed about religion's effect on health and longevity? And how do marriage status, stress levels and other matters of spirit influence how long you'll live?

7 Tips for Anti-Aging

If your aim is to be lively and robust in your 80s and 90s, you need an anti-aging program.
Here are the most frequently touted anti-aging techniques.

Eat a diet low in fat, high in complex carbohydrates
The standard advice from the US government is to consume 5 fruits and vegetables and 3 servings of whole grains daily for vitamins and minerals and the other healthful micronutrients in plants. Drink five to eight 8-oz. glasses of water. Get no more than about 30-35 percent of daily calories from fat, with about 20 percent of that from unsaturated fat (e.g., 1 percent milk, olive and canola oil); 15 percent from protein; and the remaining calories from carbohydrates, with an emphasis on complex carbohydrates like oatmeal, whole wheat bread and wild rice.

Build endurance and strength with exercise
Regular aerobic exercise is a "must-do" for anyone committed to slowing the aging process, agree experts. Hundreds of studies show that exercise combats the loss of stamina, muscle strength, balance, and bone density that increases with age. The American Heart Association advises doing a single set of eight to 15 repetitions, using eight to 10 exercises, two to three times a week for a comprehensive strength-building program. If you are not a beginner, that's about a 10-minute routine.

Maximize Your Intake of Antioxidants
The evidence is "incontrovertible" and bears repeating, says Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg of Tufts University. Free radicals contribute to the onset of age-related diseases and antioxidants "neutralize" free radicals. Everyone should "take a combination of antioxidants" through diet and supplementation, he asserts. Blumberg advises eating dark-colored vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, squash, and spinach for carotenoids and blue and purple berries for flavonoids. Because foods contain many classes of antioxidants that work synergistically, they are the superior source of antioxidants, says Blumberg. But because we don't always eat as we should, Blumberg advocates taking daily supplements of the "classic" antioxidants: 200-250 mg of vitamin C; 100-400 IU of vitamin E; and a mixed carotenoid supplement of 6-10 mg. "I always tell people that taking antioxidants is 'like driving with a seatbelt,'" says Blumberg. They can protect you're life, but they are not "a license to drive recklessly."

Use Renova to Reduce Wrinkles
Unless you have been hyper-vigilant about shielding yourself from the sun since you were knee high, the signs of aging skin — fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots — are likely to emerge by the time you enter your fourth decade. "Ninety-five percent of wrinkles are due to sun exposure," says Doris Day, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center. Happily, there is a real wrinkle eraser. Renova is the only FDA-approved prescription cream proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, fade brown spots, and smooth skin tone. The vitamin A derivative exfoliates the skin and increases the production of collagen. Renova "works really well as an anti-wrinkle cream. It even works in some people who have early signs of sun damage and early signs of skin cancer," says Day. It comes in a concentration of 0.02 percent and 0.05 percent so just about everyone can tolerate it. Using Renova will cost you about $10 to $15 a month.

Cutting-Edge Options for Aging Skin
Turn back the clock on aging skin. You have a wide spectrum of options that fall short of surgery to restore your youthful appearance, ranging from exfoliation to dermabrasion to laser resurfacing. For details on each one and how they work, visit our Plastic Surgery Center.

Restore Your Hormones to Youthful Levels
Loss of energy, libido and stamina are the symptoms that usually drive patients into the waiting rooms of anti-aging doctors. They're also the "classic" symptoms of declining hormone levels and the reason hormone-replacement therapy is the no. 1 weapon in the arsenal of anti-aging medicine. Production of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in women and testosterone in men decreases rapidly after age 35, says Nadu Tuakli, M.D. of the Anti-Aging and Longevity Institute in Baltimore. Anti-aging physician Richard LeConde, who prescribes testosterone for his female patients, notes a dramatic improvement in their well being not seen with estrogen and progesterone alone. It definitely "produces an awakening in men," but most of the women for whom I add testosterone "refuse to give it up."

HGH: The Ultimate Anti-Aging Therapy?
Though controversial and only within the reach of those willing to shell out up to $300 a month, human growth hormone (HGH) is the "best treatment we currently have for preserving vitality until the end of your normal genetic lifespan," says LeConde, who at age 52 has been injecting himself daily with HGH for the past 5 years. The 30-gauge, one-quarter inch needle he adds, is a "very low obstacle" for his patients, most of whom are over age 50 and report reduced body fat, increased muscle tone, enhanced sexual performance, elevated mood and firmer skin from HGH treatments.

HGH has been approved by the FDA to treat adult growth human deficiency but not as a routine anti-aging therapy. That will take tens of years because "everyone is a candidate for HGH," says LeConde. In the meantime, "those of us over 50 can't wait for the FDA to approve one of the safest, most effective interventions we have."

Introduction to Healthy Aging

Recently, a 74-year-old Argentinean rancher was referred to me by the cardiologist he visits annually in New York City. He was being treated for hypertension, but was otherwise considered to be healthy. "I need 10 more years to complete my life's work," he stated. Is it possible to extend your lifespan and become healthier in later years by changing behavior and seeking certain types of care? ABSOLUTELY!

All About Aging

The human life span has been growing dramatically. A person born in 1776 could expect to live 35 years. By the year 1900, the average life span was only 47 years. But a girl baby born today can expect to live 79 years, and a boy baby 72. People who live to older ages have an even greater life expectancy. A woman who lives to 65 has another 18.9 years on average to live, and a woman who lives to age 85 will average another 6 years of life.

The centenarian club
The most dramatic increases have been in the number of people living to advanced old age. In 1900, only one out of every 100,000 people lived to be 100 years old; today, one out of every 8-10,000 people makes it to 100. Our population of centenarians is growing by 8% each year, as opposed to a growth rate of only 1% for the population at large. Today, there are 50,000 centenarians in the United States, but there are projected to be one million by the year 2050!

Life span predictions
Will the human life span continue to grow, until we have a country of Methusalahs? Probably not. Major increases in life expectancy in the early part of this century were due to decreases in the infant mortality rate, and advances in public health. But it has been more difficult to improve the survival rates of those with chronic diseases, which have dominated in modern times, and increases in life expectancy have been relatively flat over the past 10 years. Many aging experts project that the average human life span will not extend much beyond 85, without major breakthroughs in the biology of aging. Besides, most people's reaction to the idea of living to 100 is, "no thanks", unless they can be guaranteed that they will be vigorous, active, and mentally intact 100 year olds. The goal of "adding life to years" rather than simply "adding years to life" is what most people hope for.

Cloudy Apple Juice Packs More Punch!

March 2007 -- Cloudy apple juice appears to be the clear winner when it comes to disease-fighting antioxidants. A new study shows cloudy apple juice, made from unpeeled fruit and contains pulp, has up to four times the anti-oxidents (polyphenols) as some clear apple juice. Polyphenols, a class of antioxidants found in plants, are believed to provide a variety of health benefits, like fighting heart disease heart disease and possibly even cancer. Polyphenols are also found in red wine, dark chocolate, and red berries.

In the study, published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, researchers compared the polyphenol content of cloudy vs. clear juices made from Idared and Champion apples. The results showed cloudy juices had up to four times the polyphenols of clear juice, and cloudy juice made from Champion apples had the highest polyphenol content. For example, cloudy Champion apple juice had a total polyphenolic content of 1,044 milligrams per liter (mg/L) compared with 250 mg/L found in clear Idared juice. Researcher Jan Oszmianski and colleagues at the Agricultural University of Wroclaw, Poland say the clarification process involved in creating clear apple juice may remove solids and other compounds rich in polyphenols.
